Here I explain why marriages are broken, or separated or divorced etc. There are no universal remedies. The necessary remedies depend on particular birth chart. Hereunder I give some more examples :

Example: 2 :- Sukra in 3^rd house (upachaya) and is conjunct with two malefics Rahu and Gulika; Moon and Saturn are in mutually 7^thhouses; Saturn aspects Venus (vivaha-kaaraka); these malefic factors caused delay in her marriage. She was married late, during her 34^thyear.

Vedic Astrology Delay in Marriage

To analyze the marriage in astrology the following is studied:

Placement and strength of the 7th lord (the lord of marriage) and its relationship with other planets governing marriage and married life. The condition of the 7th house (the house of spouse) is also analyzed .
Position and strength of Venus, the significator of marriage.
The 2nd, 5th and 12th houses and their lords.
Location of Mars in the birth chart
The relationship between the lords of 1st and 7th houses
The following factors leads to early marriage:


The seventh lord is in Kendra and well placed and is a benific planet.
The seventh lord is aspected by a benefic lord.
Lagna lord is benefic and strong.
Venus is well placed without the company of malefic planet.
Benific planet in seventh house.
The second lord is well placed, occupied or aspected by benefic planet.
The twelth house is free from any malefic planet.

The following factors leads to little delay in marriage:

There is a little malefic influence to the seventh lord.
There is a malefic influence on Venus.

The following factors leads to lot of delay in marriage:

If the Sun and Moon stay in the sign and constellation of Saturn the marriage is delayed.
If Saturn conjuncts with Venus or Rahu or Mercury in 7th house marriage gets delayed.
If the lagna and the 7th house or their lords or Venus are positioned between Saturn and Sun, marriage will be delayed.
If the Sun and Saturn are adversely posited in the lagna or the 7th house or vice versa.
Sun and Moon are enemies of Venus. If Venus occupies any of the sign of Cancer or Leo and that is flanked on both sides by the Sun and the Moon, the marriage will have many obstructios.
The position of the lord of the lagna in the 7th house can either deny marriage or can create aversion to marriage in the person and may cause unhappiness to the family members and displeasure in the marriage and family life.
If Rahu is in the 7th house with two malefics, the marriage is obstructed. Even retrograde planets like Jupiter, Venus and Mercury in 7th house can cause delays or obstacles in the marriage.


Here are few combinations how no marriage yog is formed:

If Sun and Venus are in 5th, 7th or 9th house.
If Saturn is in 7th house from Moon
If a malefic is in 7th house from Venus
If Sun, Moon or Venus is week and are conjoined or aspect by saturn

Timing of Marriage | Delays and Remedies

Prediction of marriage and delays has to be seen from effect on the factors associated with 7th house.  An attempt is made in this article to predict marriage and to provide remedies for delays. It is not an attempt to predict horoscope compatibility as it is covered in other articles.

The main factors that are important in a horoscope are as follows:

7th house in the horoscope, 7th house lord and its placement in the kundali

Venus for male birth and Jupiter for female birth

2nd house & its lord because it denotes family

Lack of Marriage vs. Delay

As with other houses in the horoscope, any malefic influence on these factors will indicate delay or lack of marriage. A delay should be predicted by a malefic influence followed by a beneficial planetary influence. There is no age for marriage. There are some who get married late in life and there are some who never get married. Lack of marriage is predicted by a strong malefic influence on all the factors in the horoscope. Rahu’s influence along with other beneficial influence indicated marriage, but an unconventional one.

Timing of marriage

Assuming that there is some favourable influence that does not deny marriage in a kundali, lets try to  put down rules for marriage To predict marriage using vimshottari dasha alone, consider the ruling mahadasha and antardasha lords. If these are placed 6/8 or 2/12 from each other in a kundali, it is an unfavourable combination and adverse to all the factors that are falling under their influence. Therefore, these planets, if associated with 7th house, will deny marriage.

Lets tabulate factors that do predict marriage:

1. If these are Venus, Jupiter, 7th house lord or beneficial planets located in or having drishti on 7th house in rashi chart or navamsha chart, the marriage is directly predicted. If these dashas are not running at a given time, it become a little tricky and question arises if marriage is not possible at the given time or is predicted through some other means. This is when we need to bring other factors in.
2. Rahu is putrakaraka, if associated by location or drishti with 5th house. Rahu is a malefic planet, but its influence does help in marriage. Ongoing Rahu dasha can help in marriage.
3. Going by putrakaraka logic, marriage should be predicted by 5th (and 9th) house also.
4. Jupiter and ascendant lord’s transit over trikonas from 7th house in rashi and navamsha can be used to predict marriage.
5. Lagna lord and 7th lord if are in conjunction in transit – if they are disposed favourably in a kundali and are not temporal or natural enemies.

If these factors are all negative, then marriage is unlikely at that time. This is an indication of delay in marriage.

Please refer to the example kundali here. Venus is 7th lord in this horoscope. It therefore signifactor of marriage from two angles. It is located 7th from a strong Moon in a friend’s house. Therefore, marriage is not denied.  However, this horoscope has effect of Manglik dosha on the marriage factors an angle – it is 4th from Moon. Mars is in Libra and 12th house and is an exception to manglik dosha, but it is still 4th from moon. It aspects both 7th from lagna and 7th from Moon in the kundali. Mars has an additional blemish of being 6th house lord in this kundali.

Lets look at the timing aspect here:

• As of the time of writing the article, Jupiter is transiting in Gemini and will not be able to transit either trine from 7th house in rashi chart (Virgo or Capricorn) or Navamsha chart (Capricorn or Taurus) in near future. The next transit for Jupiter in Cancer starts on 19th June 2014. Its effect is out of question then.
• Lagna lord is also the 6th lord and its transit will also not be useful.
• Looking at the Vimshottari dasha, the person is currently running Venus/Moon, which will get over soon and Venus/Mars will start after that.
• It will not be possible to get the person married in Venus/Mars due to the issues mentioned above.
• Only when Venus/Mars gets over and Venus/Rahu starts is when there is a possibility of this person getting married. Rahu is in 7th house and will affect marriage directly also.

It is interesting to note that these very factors that cause delay prior to marriage can cause rift between husband and wife post marriage. These may lead to separation and divorce if there are indications of multiple marriages in a horoscope. These should also be carefully judged in a horoscope during the process of horoscope matching. More of that in a later post.

Remedies to take care of delays:

An astrologer usually prescribes the following for delays causing marriage:

1. Worship Lord Krishna. His worship helps not just for marriage but for progeny also.
2. Stone of Jupiter – pukhraj or topaz to be worn. It should be a clear yellow stone of approx 4-5 carats and needs to be cast in a gold ring. It needs to be worn in the right index finger. Usual rituals of wearing a gemstone need to be followed. This remedy is relevant for women and not for men.
3. Goddess Parvati got married to Lord Shiva after an arduous tapasya on the day of Mahashivratri. Both Shiva and Parvati are hence karakas of marriage. Their worship is very important. Fasting and praying to Shiva on Mondays helps. This remedy is again relevant for women.

2. Second house and Fourth house - These two house represents family life and comforts obtained from family respectively. If fourth house is being aspected by cruel stars like ( rahu, keu, saturn, mars and sun ), then chances of delay, not getting much comforts from marriage, not getting good treatment in laws house is depicted.

Bhagavan Sri Satya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi, in India. Venus lord of 7^th house and Vivaha-kaarka is in birth lagnam and is combusted (dagdha yoga); Venus is conjunct with Satrun (malefic); the lord of 7^th house from Indu-lagna is Jupiter and is in 8^th house from Moon. Saturn also was combusted. So he had no vivaha- yoga.He was never married and stayed as a Sanyasi (Ascetic).

CAUSES FOR DELAYS IN MARRIAGES

“Marriages are made in heaven” is an old dictum and many believe it. But due to changed times, mixing of various culture, moral values and changes in human outlook and attitudes, marriages also have changed. Today (July—25—2008) I explain why marriages are broken, or separated or divorced etc. There are no universal remedies. The necessary remedies depend on particular birth chart and I can suggest the suitable remedies if a person consults me; my e-mail is : pandit@jothishi.com.

Maladies pertaining to marriages may be classified into the following cateagories :

1) Delay or denial of marriage

2) Absence of conjugal bliss.

3) Loss of life partner

4) Seperation or divorce.

We have to consider the following aspects in the birth chart of the person and find the causes.

(1) If the Sun and Moon stay in the sign and constellation of Saturn the marriage is delayed.
(2) If Saturn conjuncts with Venus or Rahu or Mercury in 7th house marriage gets delayed appreciably.
(3) If both Sun and Moon stay in the navamsa of Saturn, and Venus has also the influence of Saturn in Navamsa, there will be many obstructions to have marriage.
(4) If the lagna and the 7th house or their lords or Venus are positioned between Saturn and Sun, marriage will be delayed.
(5) If the Sun and Saturn are adversely posited in the lagna or the 7th house or vice versa, the marriage will be delayed for many years; marriage may be denied if both planets Sun and Saturn are at in mutually 7th house . Same type of delay occurs if Saturn and Moon are conjunct or stay in mutually 7th houses. Then the chance for absolute denial of marriage is less.
(6) Sun and Moon are enemies of Venus. If Venus occupies any of the sign of Cancer or Leo and that is flanked on both sides by the Sun and the Moon, the marriage will have many obstructios. If Venus is in Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra and Aquarius except Libra and closely conjunct with malefic (within 5* on either side), there will be severe problems in the settlement of marriage.

Total Lunar Eclipse would occur on April 03 and April 04, 2015. It would be the first Lunar Eclipse of 2015. The Moon will be completely covered by the Earth's Umbral shadow at maximum eclipse. The portion of the moon inside the Umbral shadow will only be illuminated by sunlight refracted through the Earth's atmosphere and having a reddish hue. The longest duration of totality would be 4 minutes and 43 seconds.

The Lunar Eclipse would be visible from India, western North America, South America, the Pacific, East Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

What is Lunar Eclipse or Chandra Grahana? - We call it Chandra Grahana or Lunar Eclipse when the earth comes between the sun and the moon.    This will occur only when the sun, earth and the moon are aligned exactly, that will be always on a full moon (Pournami) day.

What is Vedaramba? - This is a period after start of  which period, we must not take eat/drink anything. This will be 9 hours prior to Chandra Grahana and 12 hours before Surya Grahana, respectively.

When to do sandhyavandana on grahana day?

Answer – Morning Sandhyavandana, Maadhyahnika, saayam sandhyavandana as usual.

Pooja when and how to do?

Answer - Morning only normally visarjana to be done.    Evening again during Grahana period nirmaalya to be done.

What are the sacred hymns/slokas  to be recited during grahana period ?

Answer - During Grahana period Gayatri Japa, Vayustuti parayana, Narayanashtakshara Mantra japa, Krishnastakshara mantra japa, Vishnu sahasra naama parayana, Rayara Stotra parayana, etc.. to be done  for gents.

During Grahana period Gurumantra, paTana of  Keshavanaama, Madhwanaama,  Lakshmi shobaana, etc., to be done for ladies.  Even Gents can do the paTana of the above shlokaas.

When we have to give tarpana during Grahana period ?

Answer -  During the madhya kaala of the Grahana period, tarpanaadhikaarigalu have to give tarpana.

Patients have some diseases like diabetic,  BP, and other major diseases.  They can’t fast for more period.  As they have to give tarpana,  they should be fasting upto the Grahana period.  But this grahana is during evening.  Whether they can take some light food, just on health ground, and give tarpana?

Answer -  As far as possible, one has to give tarpana during Grahana periodf and he should be fasting till Grahana samaapthi.  But due to health grounds, they can take light food (minimum food for patients purpose) and give tarpana during Grahana period.

We must not take food on this day, as Vedarambha starts from sooryodaya itself  (i.e.,9 hours before the start of Chandra Grahana,). (For Suryagrahana it should be before 12 hours, before the start of the grahana)

There is an exception for sick, pregnant, and aged above people 80 years  and children below 8 years, who can take food upto 10.00 am.  For others, they should not take any food on this day.  They can take food only after moksha of Chandra Grahana

 For patients/children and pregnant, upto what time one can eat on the grahana day ?

Answer – In India upto 10am.  In other countries, and every where 9 hours before the start of Grahana (Vedarambha period).

Whether one has to give hastodaka, panchamrutha abhisheka on this day?

Answer -  No.  On this day we must not do panchamrutha, phalasamarpane, hastodaka for yathigalu, as the yathigalu will be on fasting on the Grahana Day

If one has soothaka/vruddhi or Rajaswala, , whether he/she has to observe grahana.

Answer -   Yes.  Irrespective of Sootha, Vruddhia, rajaswala, they have to observe grahana.  Different formalities explained here separately.

What is the significance of Darbe during grahana -   Darbae is born from the body of Varaha devaru.   In Darba, there is sannidhana of Srihari, Brahma and Rudra devaru.  So, Darba is always pure.    During Grahana, all these items like milk, curds, vegetables, which are being kept will lose their power and becomes unusable.  But with the use of Darba being kept on these items, their shuddatwa will be maintained and one can use the same after Grahana also.

Shraddha falling on Pournami day -     In case of death anniversary falling on the eclipse day, regular shraddha will be performed only after the eclipse is over.  If on the grahana day, morning bhojana is permitted, then shraddha can be done on the same day. Otherwise, the shradda to be done after grahana is over.  This time they can do it on the same day in the morning.

Do not indulge in following activities:

1. We must not go for urinals/latrine during Grahana – If we go for urinals – we will get daaridrya,  if we go for latrine – we will get the Janma of insect.
2. We must not sleep during Grahana Time, if we sleep we will get diseases
3. We must  not do maithuna during Grahana – if done, we will get Janma of pig
4. We must  not do abhyanjana snaana – if done, we will kusta roga.   As such, one must not eat, sleep, urinals, maithuna, bhojana during grahana kaala

As Grahana is visible in India only after suryaasta (i.e., after 6.39pm), we need not do snaana, etc., at 3.45 pm.   However, at 6.39pm, we have to take bath, and do all the parayana, japa during the available period of  35 minutes.  Once that Grahana moksha time is over, i.e., at  7.15 pm,  we have to take bath, and do pooja, naivedya ( Hastodaka not to be done).    Then only bhojana can be taken.  For those who have to do shraddha, they have to do it after grahana moksha.

Apropos to my previous article about marriage and relationships; I am trying to share and explain my understandings and observations regarding timing of marriage. In Brihat Parashara Hora Shashtra (Chapter 20), some planetary combinations (Yogas) are mentioned about the marital age.  However, exact identification of the marriage giving Dasa is not mentioned in BPHS.  In tenth chapter of Phaladeepika though, Sage Mantreshawara has given some hints regarding the marriage time.  In this article, I will try to explore and explain these Yogas for the benefit of the reader.

First, I will be taking a few verses mentioned in Chapter 20 of Brihat Parashara Hora Shashtra.  The Venus is considered as general significator for wife and marriage in female horoscopes; while for female Horoscope, this role is assigned to Jupiter.  Therefore, wherever the Sage mentioned the role of Venus as significator for wife and marriage – it is to be taken as Jupiter for female horoscope.

The Verse 22 says that if the seventh lord is in zodiac sign of auspicious planet and Venus is in its own zodiac sign or exalted  in a vedic astrology horoscope – it will confer early marriage to the native. Sage Parashara specifically mentioned the age of marriage as 5th or 9th year.  During earlier times, marriage is usually pre-scheduled and fixed by the parents during the early childhood and getting married before the age of 15 years was quite common.  Therefore, for today’s culture and system, this should be taken as early and/or timely marriage for the native and in accordance with the customs being followed by the family.  Both seventh lord and karaka for wife i.e. Venus are placed in good and favorable zodiac signs are said to giver of early and/or timely marriage.  The houses occupied by these planets viz. the seventh lord and Venus will also have a say and the results will be modified accordingly.  Similarly, the disposition of these planets in Navamsha Chart should also be analyzed.

As per Verse 22 – If the Sun, in a vedic astrology horoscope,  is placed in seventh house and the seventh lord is united with Venus – it will generate marriage in 7th or 11th year of age.  The placement of the Sun in seventh house is not considered much auspicious for marriage; and thus, the sign occupied by the Sun in seventh house should be given due consideration.  The union of seventh lord with Venus (significator for wife and marriage) is mentioned as capable of generating marriage for the native within marriageable age.  And, and mentioned above, for female horoscopes, the role of Venus is replaced by Jupiter.  That is if the seventh lord is united with Jupiter in a female horoscope – it will generate the similar results as Venus for male horoscope.

Verse 24 states that if the Venus is placed in second house and the seventh lord is in eleventh house – marriage takes place in 10th or 16th year.  This verse is related with the placement of Venus (significator for wife and marriage) in the house of family (second house); and if at the same time the lord of seventh house has gone to the house of gains (eleventh house), the early and/or timely marriage is conferred upon by such placement of planets.

Verse 25  is related to the disposition of lagna lord and  Venus in the Lagna Chart. If Venus is placed in Kendra and Lagna (Ascendant) lord in the sign of Saturn – the marriage will take place in the 11th year.  The first, fourth, seventh and tenth houses are called Kendra Bhavas. The occupation of the zodiac sign of Saturn by the Ascendant lord is considered to be causing some delay in the marriage due to which the marriage is said to be taking place in 11th year.

As per Verse 26 , if Venus is placed in Kendra Bhavas of a vedic astrology horoscope and  such Venus is also having seventh aspect of Saturn, marriage is in 12th or 19th year.  If Moon also joins the Saturn, then the marriage is in 18th year.  This verse is very important and containing good clues for ascertaining the marriage time.  The disposition of the Venus in Kendra Bhavas (1, 4, 7, 10 houses) is supportive for marriage to take place.  However,  the aspect of Saturn on Venus is said to be delaying the marriage.  And, if Moon also comes under the direct influence of Saturn via union; it will further delay the marriage.  Thus, the Hon’ble Sage Parashara has given a very potent and additional clue, which will be helpful in deciding the timing of marital prospects in a vedic astrology horoscope.   The nature of Saturn for specific Ascendant as well as the zodiac sign occupied by it will also have a say in determining the exact nature of influence being exerted by Saturn.  And, if Saturn happens to be an auspicious planet and occupy auspicious zodiac signs; in that case, the delay may not be significant or even may not take place at all depending upon the nature and strength of seventh lord in the vedic astrology horoscope.

Verse 28 suggests that if, in a vedic astrology horoscope, the lord of second house is placed in eleventh house; and at the same time the Lagna lord is occupying the tenth house– it will generate marriage in the 15th year.  This verse indicates the connection and potency of Lagna Lord to generate marriage.  A strong and well placed Lagna lord; and the support of second (family) house is capable of generating marriage.   Now a day, the age of 15 years will be too early; thus, it can be taken as marriage during prime youth i.e. between 25 to 30 years of age. And, if the disposition of Venus and seventh lord is also good and supportive; the marriage may take place even during initial phase of young age.

As per Verse 29; if there is an exchange taking place between second and eleventh houses of a vedic astrology horoscope; the native will be blessed with marriage during 13th year.  This verse appears to be based upon the sole strength of second (family) house; which can also generate timely marriage.  And, the disposition of second lord in Navamsha Chart should also be analyzed for concluding the fruitfulness of this Yoga.

Verse 30 is related with identifying major delays in the marriage.  It says that if Venus placed in second house of a vedic astrology horoscope; and at the same time second lord is making union with Mars – this will generate marriage in 22nd or 27th years of age.  For current scenario, this can be taken as marriage around 40 years of age.  This verse deals with contradictory placements of planets for marital prospects as well as the role of dispositor in deciding the fruitfulness of a planet.  The disposition of Venus in second house  is good and potent for promoting marital prospects.  However, the union of second lord with Mars is not considered to be auspicious for matters related to family and marriage.  Therefore, under such situation; the results of auspicious planet (i.e. Venus ) will come after delay and obstructions.

Verse 31 states that if the Lagna lord in the Navamsha of 7th house of a vedic astrology horoscope i.e. the Lagna or Ascendant lord is in the zodiac sign which falls in the seventh house of Navamsha Chart; and the seventh house lord is placed in twelfth house – the marriage will be conferred in 23rd or 26th years of age.  In modern times, this can be understood for marriage around/after 40 years of age.  This verse is also of great importance as such it indicates the importance of planetary placement in Navamsha Chart.

As per Verse 32  if the lord of eighth house is placed in seventh house  and the Navamsha Lagna is occupied by Venus in a vedic astrology horoscope – the marriage will take place in 25th  or 33rd  years of age.  In modern times, this can be taken as delayed marriage taking place around 45th years of age.  This verse also suggests the importance of Navamsha Chart as well as the role of Venus (significator for marriage in male horoscope; and for female horoscope this role is played by Jupiter) in blessing the native with marital happiness.

Verse 34 is related to the disposition of Venus in a vedic astrology horoscope.  It says that if Venus is positioned in fifth house; and Rahu is also placed in fifth or ninth houses – the marriage is said to be taking place in 31st or 33rd year.  This verse indicates the importance of Venus as significator for marriage (for female horoscope, Jupiter should be considered) and the in-auspiciousness of Rahu in creating delay/obstructions in marriage.

In addition to above, the last section of tenth chapter of Phaladeepika ( by Hon’ble Sage Mantreshwara) also contains some good clues to ascertain the marriage time in a vedic astrology horoscope.  It says:

1.  Identify the sign occupied by the lord of Ascendant in Lagna and Navamsha Chart.  And, when Venus or the seventh lord transits through the zodiac signs falling in Trikona house from either of these zodiac signs – this will generate marriage.   For example, if one is born in Cancer Ascendant, wherein the first house is ruled by the Moon.  And, if the Moon occupies Taurus zodiac sign in Lagna Chart and Aquarius zodiac sign in Navamsha Chart.  In that case, the transit of Saturn or Venus from trikona bhavas from these two zodiac signs (i.e. from Gemini, Virgo, Libra or Capricorn) can generate marriage.

2.      Identify the planet(s) which are:

• Placed in seventh house of Lagna Chart
• Casting their aspect on seventh house of Lagna Chart
• Lord of seventh house.

When the dasa of any of these above planets is operational; and the Ascendant lord is transiting through seventh house, it can generate marriage.

3.      Another method of identifying the time of marriage in a vedic astrology horoscope is mentioned below.

First identify the following:

• Which is stronger among Venus and Moon?
• And, which planet is stronger among the lord of the sign, which is occupied by seventh house lord in Lagna Chart and the lord of the sign occupied by the seventh lord in Navamsha.

Marriage may take place during the dasa/Antardasa of such strong planets (identified as above), when the transit Jupiter passes through the zodiac signs falling in Trikona from the zodiac signs occupied by seventh lord in Lagna and Navamsha Chart.

For deriving appropriate conclusion, during practical applications of these yogas (combinations), the following points should be kept into consideration:

The strength of first house and its lord:    The whole horoscope revolves around the first house of natal birth chart as such all the positive or negative results (indicated by the planetary disposition) are to be felt and experienced by the person concerned.  A strong and well placed lord of first house; and auspicious planetary influences on the first house ensures good protection against the inauspicious influences taking place in a horoscope.  Therefore, if the Lagna lord is strong, it will help in smooth and steady rise in overall aspect of life including marriage; On the contrary,  weak and troubled first house/lord may generate negative results even with minor afflictions/weaknesses in the horoscope.

The strength of second house and its lord:    Inter alia other things, the second house of a vedic astrology horoscope also  represents family.  And, the strength and disposition of second house and its lord is always observed to be very prominently supportive for fruitfulness of marriage and post marital relationships.   Many times, when the second house and its lord are under severe afflictions; there may be troubles in getting married or problems in post marital relationships.

The strength of seventh house and its lord:    In vedic astrology horoscope, the seventh house and its lord directly represents the other half i.e. spouse.  And, therefore, the malefic planetary influences on second house or on seventh lord may also deteriorate the fruitfulness of the horoscope in terms of marriage.

The strength and disposition of marriage Karaka:    Venus is considered as prime significator for wife and marriage in male horoscope.  And, for female horoscope, this role is assigned to Jupiter.  Quite a time, the disposition of Venus or Jupiter may act as independent factor for deciding the marital significations.  And, even in the yogas/combinations mentioned by Sage Parashara; very reasonable preference is observed to be given to the disposition of Venus in a horoscope.

Transit:        The transit also have its space and value in blessing the native with marriage.  However, it has to be seen in the light of overall planetary disposition and the operating dasa.  Like, if the relevant planets are fairly disposed and operating dasa is also favoring marriage; even minor transit support may generate the marriage.  On the contrary, if there is weakness on the part of above mentioned houses/planets; and inauspicious or irrelevant dasa is operational – even the strong transit influence may go fruitless.
